Abstract
"First Person" piece detailing the difficulties experienced by those using a wheelchair in Portland, mentioning snow-covered sidewalks and the inaccessibility of a majority of Portland's attractions and housing. Scott Harmon of Home Care Services, a South Portland provider of rental equipment for the disabled, estimates that only 40 percent of Portland is fully accessible. Despite the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Portland's old housing stock and infrastructure don't easily accommodate many disabled.
