Abstract

"This Just In" piece on efforts to control skyrocketing gas prices resulting from Hurricane Katrina. U.S. Rep Tom Allen, D-Maine, called for President Bush to force big oil companies to limit their profit margins to the levels that existed before the hurricane, and for the nation to increase energy efficiency. Maine Republicans propose suspending the gas tax for 60 days, repealing the heating oil tax on businesses, and reducing state vehicle traffic by 15 percent. Ideas that didn't get mentioned by either political party include improving public transportation, limiting home-building outside of urban areas, and indexing excise taxes by fuel efficiency.
