Abstract

"This Just In" piece on Maine's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), with a focus on the recent resignation of commissioner Dawn Gallagher amid allegations that she negotiated with industry interests. Gallagher allegedly offered to ignore polluting violations by International Paper if a state representative who works as a manager at the company would support legislation to clean up the Androscoggin River. David Van Wie, former director of the DEP's Bureau of Land and Water Quality, contends that Gov. John Baldacci encourages such activities, adding that the DEP became much more political and lobbyist-driven once Baldacci took office. Matt Davis, advocate for Environment Maine, says a new commissioner at the DEP can mean good news for environmentalists.
