Abstract

Article on the proposed repeal of the business equipment tax, noting that Gov. John Baldacci is pushing the repeal as part of his re-election campaign. In 1995, the state began reimbursing companies for the taxes paid, for a term of 12 years on each piece of equipment, through at program called the Business Equipment Tax Reimbursement (BETR). With comments by Christopher Hall, chief lobbyist at the Maine State Chamber of Commerce; Geoff Herman, chief lobbyist at the Maine Municipal Association; and Peter Mills, a Republican gubernatorial primary candidate.
