Abstract

"In the Lobby" piece on Noam Chomsky, a linguistics professor and philosopher at MIT, who spoke at the University of New England (UNE) in Biddeford last week as part of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. Chomsky's speech on the U.S. government's flouting of human rights worldwide drew around 1,500 attendees. A critic of the mainstream media, Chomsky's visit was ignored by the major media outlets in the state, including the Portland Press Herald. With comments by Richard Rhames, chair of Biddeford Democrats, on a resolution passed recently by the Maine Democratic State Committee to bring the troops home from Iraq.
