Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece pointing out that the problem with the property tax is not how it is assessed, but that it is used to pay for non property-related services such as schools and the cost of welfare. A more equitable system would fund these programs through broad-based taxes such as the income tax or sales tax. Politicians are reluctant to propose this system because the rich will pay more, and there is no political profit in that. With additional comments on William Slavick, the retired college professor from Portland who's running as an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.
