Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece commenting on recent events that show Democrats are fearful that incumbent Gov. John Baldacci will lose the upcoming election. John Richardson, the Democratic speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, held a press conference on July 19th. Richardson accused Republican gubernatorial candidate Chandler Woodcock of serving as a lay minister, being a "flip-flopper," and refusing to define himself. In another desperation measure, Democratic Party chairman Ben Dudley had to admit his organization paid for a poll that asked unflattering questions about independent gubernatorial candidate Barbara Merrill and her husband. Merrill complained to the state ethics commission that this constituted an illegal push poll. Dudley countered by accusing Merrill and Woodcock of violating campaign finance law. Details.
