Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece on flaws in the Maine Clean Election Act that allow candidates to recruit opponents, then collect clean election funds for their "contested" elections. Republican state Senate candidate Stavros Mendros of Lewiston encouraged Yvette Silva to run a write-in campaign against him in 2004, thus qualifying Mendros for thousands of extra dollars in public money. Republicans Michael Mowles of Cape Elizabeth and Kevin Glynn of South Portland may have tried the same ploy. Details.
