Abstract

"This Just In" piece on the Liquor Licensing and Compliance division of the Department of Public Safety, which recently refused to approved an English beer's label featuring Santa Claus holding a beer, saying it makes the product attractive to children. However, the regulators did approve the label for Gritty's Christmas Ale, which shows a man dressed up as Santa Claus, also holding a beer. Shelton Brothers, importers of the banned Santa's Butt winter porter, filed suit in federal court, claiming violation of the First Amendment's protection of artistic expression. Maine regulators have also banned two other labels, calling them "undignified or improper."
