Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece on Sen. Ethan Strimling, D-Portland, and his potential bid for the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 1st District. Republicans and Democratic opponents are criticizing Strimling for continuing to work as a talk-show host on WGAN radio, where they claim he is using the program to discuss issues in the race. But under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Federal Election Commission rules, Strimling is not yet considered a candidate, so broadcast stations are not required to provide equal time to opponents. Jeff Wade, WGAN program director, dismisses ethical questions about Strimling's continued presence on the air, saying the Strimling does not meet the definition of a candidate. With additional comments on the right-wing websites "As Maine Goes," and "MaineFirst."
