Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece on Maine's aging population, noting that a recent study shows the trend reversing in the 25-34 year old age bracket, with an increase of 6,000 people in that age group. Earlier this year, the Legislature passed a bill that would give tax credits to students who earn two- or four-year degrees in Maine to reimburse them for their education loans. Aimed at stopping the "brain drain," only graduates who continue to live and work in the state qualify. If the population of young Mainers continues to grow, the price tag for this program would also increase.
