Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece commenting on Maine's high energy costs, noting electric bills have been forced up by a number of factors. Rules developed by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) require that the cost of producing a kilowatt-hour is now determined by the cost of the most expensive fuel, not by averaging the costs of all sources of power. In addition, the Legislature is requiring that in the near future, 40 percent of our power come from renewable sources - the highest percentage of any state. There are also mandates to reduce greenhouse gases. Details.
