Abstract

"This Just In" piece on "the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007." Many fear that the federal legislation, sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, seeks to outlaw the Constitutionally- protected freedoms of speech, thought, and assembly. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, has refused to make any official statements about the bill, effectively endorsing it with her silence. Democratic Representative Tom Allen and Mike Michaud have backed the legislation. Earlier this week, about 30 protestors representing the Native Forest Network, Peace Action Maine, and the Maine Civil Liberties Group rallied in Monument Square in opposition to Collins's bill and the rest of the Maine delegation's support for it.
