Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece on the proposed elimination of the state Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability (OPEGA), and its mandate to seek out inefficiency in state government. Since it began its work in 2005, the agency has cost taxpayers about $3 million, but has only uncovered waste totaling about $168,000. It has also suggested ways of saving another $2 million, though it is unlikely that they will ever be implemented. Details.
