Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Amtrak's new Downeaster service between Boston and Portland. The Downeaster got up and running on a relative shoestring: $62 million for track work, equipment, and three years of operating funds. But currently, Amtrak through-riders coming into Boston's North Station and wanting to travel farther south along the eastern rail corridor have to take a taxi, or two subways, to make the connection at Boston's South Station.
