Abstract
"this just in" piece on the Houlton Band of Maliseets, one of the four federally recognized Native American tribes in Maine. After a year of negotiating with federal officials the Maliseets have been granted permission to administer their own child-welfare proceedings. Currently, the Department of Human Services handles cases involving Maliseet children.
