Abstract

"Inside story" piece on the contemporary Blue Hill retirement residence of Tom and Yolanda Stein, for which architects Matthew Elliott and Eric Reinholdt of Elliott Elliott Norelius Architecture of Blue Hill, won the prestigious AIA New England 2005 Citation for Design Excellence. The couple wanted a building that would conform to the contours of the land, which drops to 300 feet of shoreline. The timber frame house, clad in shingles and copper, consists of two parallel wings connected by a glass corridor. Contractor Brian Burgess of Deer Isle said it was one of the most logistically challenging projects he's done.
