Abstract
Article on security on Maine's borders, noting that more than 27,000 travelers cross between Maine and Canada daily. Steven J. Farquharson of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said that Portland is a border town also, receiving ferry traffic in summer and sea traffic in bulk commodities. Bangor is involved in private aircraft inspections, and receives diversions of commercial jetliners from foreign locations. Drugs are by far the most common contraband confiscated at the road crossings, mostly negligible amounts for personal use. Last year there were 220 border arrests in Maine, mostly in Portland, Houlton, and Calais.
