Abstract

An article on restaurants housed in former Howard Johnson's, including Rolandeau's in Auburn; Foreside Tavern in Falmouth; Hacienda Pancho Villa in South Portland; two Friendly's--at Exit 8 in Portland and on Western Ave. in Augusta; a McDonald's on Pleasant St. in Brunswick; Charlie's on the Causeway in Naples; Forest Ave. Plaza (#463) and the National Kidney Foundation on Congress St., both in Portland; and a Governor's in Waterville. On I-95, there is a Burger King in Gardiner and two in Gray, a Ground Round in Augusta, and Popeye's Chicken and Sbarro Pizza in Kennebunk. A HoJo's in Wells on Route 1 burned down in the mid-80s. The last one standing is on Odlin Road in Bangor, one of only five in existence. Waitress Kathe Jewett has worked there since the restaurant opened in 1966.
