Abstract

Kirsten Cappy of Portland, a children's-book publicist, estimates there are over 60 illustrators and authors in Maine. She believes that after kids'-book artists move to Maine, their work begins to show Maine's effects. Artist Dahlov Ipcar, 89, of Georgetown, says "Maine has realized art is not just a frill, it's a basic industry." With profiles of Maine illustrators Melissa Sweet, 51, of Rockport; Scott Nash, 47, of Peaks Island; Kevin Hawkes, 47 of Gorham, and Debby Atwell, 54, of Rockland, as well as a list of 10 other children's-book illustrators working in Maine.
