Abstract

With the rising price of oil, some environmentalists are rethinking nuclear energy in Maine, years after Maine Yankee, Maine's only nuclear power plant, closed in 1996. Artist Ray Shadis has been one of the state's longest-standing opponents to nuclear power and continues to be an industry watchdog. He says he has been told by industry insiders that the industry does not see New England--particularly Maine--as a place to put nuclear plants, because of the region's history of vocal opposition.
