Abstract
To celebrate its 29th year, in this issue of Portland Magazine, the editors have reprinted some classics from their archives, along with new graphics and updates. This article first appeared in the 2001 Summerguide, discussing W.E.B. Du Bois’s annual vacation to Maine, where he managed to elude the FBI agents who had begun their investigation of him beginning in 1933. Du Bois joined The Cambridge Gun & Rod Club, then interracial, but now exclusively comprised of African American men. Club members had a camp on Lake Cobbosseecontee. With an update in which James Brown V, son of the club’s historian, talks about the club and his family’s association with it.
