Abstract

Article about Captain Josiah Angier Mitchell and his Freeport-based clipper ship "Hornet," which burned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and sank on May 3, 1866. Mitchell and his crew crossed 4,000 miles of open sea in a longboat in 43 days with only 10 days rations of food and water.
