Abstract

Article comparing the lives of David Shaw, one of the richest men in Portland, and Bobby Smith, an unemployed, homeless man. Shaw, 51, is the recently retired CEO and founder in 1984, of Idexx Laboratories Inc., of Westbrook. In mid-February, his public stock in Idexx was worth $37 million. Smith, 47, who spent years working regularly in construction, is a self-admitted alcoholic who lives at the Oxford Street homeless shelter. His assets are $400 in the bank, which he has saved to rent a room. With interviews in question-and-answer format.
