Abstract

Article about Portland (then called Falmouth) during the Revolutionary War, noting that the city played host to both the British and Continental armies, and recounting the bombardment of the city by Henry Mowatt. The practice of billeting troops was common then, at least in regards to American troops. The act of billeting in Maine was renewed in the War of 1812, but it did not see the widespread practice it did in the Revolution.
