Abstract

Article on the resurgence of condominium sales across southern Maine, noting that many condo buyers are baby-boomers who find Maine living desirable. Condo sales in Portland peaked in 1987, at 388 units, and are on target to meet that mark in the near future. The Portland Planning Office says there's no limit on the number of condo conversions allowed and numerous projects are under development. While the condo craze may be pushing out longtime Portland residents, the profitability of turning buildings into condos is actually encouraging preservation of some of the city's historic architecture.
