Abstract

The state Bureau of Motor Vehicles last year issued 6,344 new seven-digit vanity plates, netting the state about $73,000 in new profit -- The plates cost $15 a pair, but the state's die-pressing machine had to be upgraded at a cost of $22,000 to handle the new seven-digit plates -- Vanity plates have been available in Maine since 1968, and there are currently more than 66,000 such plates on Maine vehicles
