Abstract

A December ruling by the state Board of Property Tax Review resulted in Bath Iron Works and the city of Bath reaching an agreement under which the city will repay the shipbuilder $5.45 million for overpaid taxes for the years 1991 through 1993. Bath City Councilor Charles Tibbetts cast the lone vote against the settlement, and has gathered enough signatures to bring the settlement to voters in a referendum in June. A voter rejection of the settlement means the city might have to proceed with a court appeal, since BIW officials have said they have no plans to renegotiate the deal. Details.
