Abstract

The former naval prison at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is being evaluated by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission for possible inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Some observors believe that the facility, which has been closed for twenty years, is too badly deteriorated to be economically rehabilitated for any future use, including that of a prison. Provides some history of the prison.
