Abstract
On July 4, 1866 much of Portland burned to the ground. It left 10,000 people homeless and destroyed $12 million worth of property. Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. compiled research, narrative and pictures that describes Portland before the fire, what happened the day of the fire, how Portland was rebuilt and the legacy the fire has provided.
