Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to treat as much as 3 million gallons of water from the Saco Tannery Pits toxic-waste site and dump it into nearby Stuart Brook beginning next month. Town officials in Scarborough say the area's lucrative clamming industry, consisting of 150 acres of clam flats worked by 25 commercial and 200 recreational diggers, will be threatened by the discharge of treated water.
