Abstract

The Portland Boxing Club is the focus of a resurgence of amateur boxing in Portland. Bobby Russo created the club and the first annual Northeast Regional Championship Tournament, which his boxers swept with their wins. Spurred by the success of Lewiston native Joey Gamache, smaller clubs sprouted in Portland, with Russo offering a permanent ring at his fighters' disposal. He wants to de-stigmatize the sport and devotes his time to the young boxers. Ex-boxer Skip Neales helps with training. Some of the kids who joined the club were at-risk and found purpose in boxing. High school student Chad Powell is seen as having world-class potential.
