Abstract

Portland's Bosnian community is growing, with more refugees fleeing the war in Sarajevo. The families are in various stages of transition. Many begin their path to becoming Americanized with a stint at Barber Foods. They work at becoming fluent in a new language and worry that their children will forget their native tongue and customs. Earlier arrivals help those who follow them find their place in the new society and navigate its complexities. Several families tell their stories.
