Abstract

Steve White took over management of the Brooklin Boatyard from his father, the late Joel White, who began the yard in 1960. On this day, carpenters are almost completely reconstructing the "Seminole," built in 1916, and constructing a new boat designed by Bob Stephens. Carpenter Havilah "Haddie" Hawkins misses the days of working with hand tools, a time recaptured by workers on the "Cirrus," which is being renovated in a separate building under the direction of Pete Chase, using age-old wooden boat-building techniques. Hawkins speaks of the difference between old boats, which have "give," and modern ones with their "rigid monocot construction." He built his own wooden boat, "Vela," without epoxy.
