Abstract

The Portland Rugby Club was invincible in the 1980s and had a membership of over 50. Today its members--including captain Jason Willey and 37-year-old Jerry Alves, who has had back surgery--scramble to have enough men to play one game on a Saturday. Reporter Chris Joob, despite his misgivings, becomes part of the team. Members describe how the game has become a part of their lives, despite the risks and sacrifices.
