Abstract

Stewart Smith, Maine's commissioner of agriculture from 1979-85 and now professor of Sustainable Agriculture and Policy at the University of Maine in Orono, believes that farmers should become more independent of the high-priced pesticides and fertilizers that have forced them to become large or die, and rely more on their own skills. Related story on bovine somatotropia (BST), a growth hormone used to stimulate milk production in cows.
