Abstract

The first Claremont Croquet Classic was played in 1976 at the Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor, the vision of hotel owner Allen McCue. Players aren't required to wear whites and play by a set of nine-wicket rules authored by McCue and his wife, Gertrude. The United States Croquet Association recently changed its platform to formally recognize nine-wicket, meaning the Claremont Classic's 20th anniversary next year will bring a whole new group of players.
