Abstract

The Joint Committee on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations recently gave the Augusta Mental Health Institute a three-year accreditation after examining 21 areas of its operations. AMHI patient advocate Richard Estabrook doesn't place much stock in the accreditation, and wants to see the facility shut down. Melodie Peet, commissioner of the Maine Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, says that acknowledging what the accreditation says about AMHI is not inconsistent with overhauling the facility.
