Abstract

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator John Villars on Friday announced that Mack Point, proposed as an alternative to Sears Island for a marine cargo terminal, is not feasible in the project's current form. DeVillars said the destruction of wetlands that would occur if Sears Island is completed would be particularly severe. Brian Nutter of the Maine Department of Transportation said it is doubtful full mitigation could be achieved on or around Sears Island itself. The public comment period on the project has been extended to October 13.
