Abstract

The $58.9 million transportation bond issue on the November 7 ballot includes $12.9 million to develop a new port facility at Estes Head in Eastport. The Estes Head facility would be managed by the Eastport Port Authority and its private industry partner, Federal Marine Terminals of Eastport. The major shipping customer would be Georgia-Pacific of Baileyville. The current port facilities have proven inadequate for the roughly 200,000 tons of cargo now being shipped by G-P, and projections call for a 50 percent increase in shipping, up to 300,000 tons annually.
