Abstract

The Maine Legislature's Banking and Insurance and Human Resources committees this week will consider a number of bills emerging from a two-year study of the Maine Health Care Reform Commission. The commission was required by law to study a single-payer, universal health care coverage plan similar to the Canadian system, which would carry a price tag of around $2.5 billion. Health care advocates say the bill with the best chance of passage this year is one that would establish a state-sponsored insurance purchasing alliance for small businesses and individuals while using the existing state employee health insurance contract as negotiating leverage.
