Abstract

Details on last week's debate on the November referendum to ban clear-cutting in the state's forests. The debate was sponsored by the Maine Audubon Society, and pitted referendum supporters Jonathan Carter and Charles FitzGerald of the Maine Green Party against Charles Gadzick of the Maine Forest Service and Steve Schley of Seven Islands Corporation. Gadzick contended that the referendum would hurt small sawmills, while FitzGerald claimed passage of the referendum would result in a highly trained workforce.
