Abstract

Some fishermen dip female lobsters in a chlorine and water solution to make them appear male, allowing them to keep to keep the lobsters. Scientists in New England responded to a call by wardens for a test to detect lobsters that had been dipped, and have come up with two tests. Scientists at the University of Maine at Orono have developed a microscope test that detects damage to the lobster's swimmerets, while other scientists have developed a chemical color reaction test.
