Abstract

Aroostook County is one of 2,200 nationally that are eligible for low-interest agricultural loans providing farmers with $1,000 to $1,100 for each tilled acre. Growers, suppliers and lenders learned last week that emergency funds appropriated by Congress had already run out. An estimated 200 Aroostook farmers suffered losses of more than 30 percent due to last year's drought, and the impact was magnified by wide-scale crop losses in 1994 caused by late blight. U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman has instructed his staff to find funds for the emergency loan program, but the funds might not be able available by June 1, when most crops must be in the ground.
