Abstract

The tree swallow feeds exclusively on flying insects and does not arrive in Maine until it is assured of nourishment. The arrival of the bird is a sure sign that winter is over and also proof that the insect population has increased sufficiently. The first swallows to arrive are exclusively male and will not stay long. The population is stabilized when the females arrive, and the birds' effect on the mosquito population is substantial.
