Abstract

Four perspectives on the forestry referendum, which appears on Tuesday's ballot as Questions 2A, 2B and 2C. Rob Baldwin of the Audubon Expedition Institute is an outdoor educator who writes that the public's perception of the Ban clear-cutting initiative may doom the measure. Gov. Angus King writes that Question 2B is the clear choice, since it protects both the economy and the environment. Roger Milliken Jr. of Baskahegan Co. supports Question 2B because it represents agreement among traditional adversaries. Bernd Heinrich, a professor of zoology at the University of Vermont and owner of a woodlot in Perkins Township, believes that the Ban clear-cutting initiative is the best option for protecting Maine's forests. Editorial supporting Question 2A.
