Abstract

Question 1 on Tuesday's ballot asks voters to approve the labelling of candidates on the ballot who refuse to endorse term limits. Political scholars say the measure imposes restrictions on candidates' rights to free speech and might be unconstitutional. The League of Women Voters has urged Mainers to oppose the measure. Former state representative John Michael of Auburn, who has fought for term limtis for several years, said the measure is no more radical than the concept of direct election of U.S. senators was 90 years ago.
