Abstract

"Back of the Book" piece by Charles Roundy of Augusta, on his grandfather, Charles H. Gould of Newport. Gould retired from the logging business in 1920, and moved to Newport from New Brunswick. He purchased the inventory of a local Watkins dealer, door-to-door salesmen who marketed a wide range of products, including spices, razor blades and extracts. The J. R. Watkins Co. was founded in 1868 in Minnesota, and later formed a nationwide network of dealers who sold the company's products.
