Abstract

History of the State Theatre on Congress Street in Portland. The State opened in 1929, offering movies that were projected on a huge screen. The American Theater Corporation acquired the State in 1969 and turned it into a pornography theater. The theater was refurbished in the early 1990s, and opened as a live-music venue in late 1993. The State is silent now, but owners Nick and Lola Kampf are working on proposals to reopen the facility. Details.
