Abstract
The Maine Republican Party in 1994 located its headquarters on Water Street in Hallowell, after purchasing the building at auction. Two doors down from the GOP building is John Merrill's bookstore. Merrill, 50, has been politically active much of his adult life, and has a sign on the front of his store that outlines his feelings about Republicans. Rick Tyler, 32, executive director of the Maine Republican Party, says Hallowell is Democratic territory, and he would prefer being in Augusta.
